Cape Coast in Ghana to host 2021 African Goalball Championships

Competition is planned for between December 6 and 10, when the host nation will debut in the men’s and women’s events.

This year’s event will be the fourth edition of the tournament with the previous three all taking place in North Africa.

Egypt has staged the competition twice and Algeria once.

“We believe the African Championships will be a fantastic end to this historic year, offering the chance to attract new interest to the sport in the region following the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics,” said Kari Raisanen, the chair of the IBSA Goalball Committee.

“Africa is a continent in which we have seen growth over the past decade, and we want to not only keep supporting teams to improve but also encourage new nations to start.

“As goalball celebrates its 75th birthday in 2021, we will be doing just that.
“We are confident that the local Organising Committee, the Ghana Blind Sports Association, will organise a great competition that reflects the importance of the time it is being held.”

Algeria won gold in both the men’s and women’s events at last year’s African Championships in Port Said in Egypt, booking their places at the postponed Tokyo 2020 Paralympics in the process.

The event in Cape Coast will be a qualifier for the 2022 IBSA Goalball World Championships in Chinese city Hangzhou.

Three teams will qualify from both the men’s and women’s events.
